The leader of the Five Points Gang, Frankie Yale, sent Capone to work for his mentor, John Torrio, in Chicago. Torrio saw Capone as a major asset, and soon he was helping Torrio run his bootlegging business. In 1925, Torrio was shot by a rival gang and his recovery was slow, so Capone took over for Torrio. Capone was now the boss of organized crime in Chicago and owned speakeasies, gambling houses, brothels, nightclubs and many other illegal businesses and had an income of over $100 million a year. Capone was very successful and attempts on his life were never successful. Capone was very proficient at eliminating his enemies before they became too powerful, so he never had any serious competition in the organized crime business.
