In 1928, Chicago's mayor, William "Big Bill" Hale Thompson Jr., forced Capone out of Chicago. Capone relocated to Palm Island, Florida because he was very unpopular due to his gang activity, and nobody want him in their city, and Palm Island is the only place he was able to live in. In 1932, Capone was sent to jail when he was found guilty of five counts of tax evasion and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. While he was in prison, his power in he organized crime business declined. Capone suffered from syphilis, which he contracted when he was young, and by 1946, he had the mind of a 12 year old. Because of his decline in his criminal career, and his illness, Capone spent the last years of his life in his home in Florida, where he died in 1947 after having a stroke.
